How to Prepare to Work From Home on the Internet

What you will need to work from home on the internet depends on whether you are in business for yourself or you are working for someone else.

If you are working for someone else:
As in any other job, employees who work from home are required to meet certain standards and guidelines.

Typically, the company you are working for will have specific software that they require that you use. Some will provide it to you and some will not. If they do not, then you will be expected to purchase the software. This expense can be tax deductible in certain circumstances, so be sure to save your receipt.

Another requirement that companies frequently demand of their home workers is that they maintain a separate area in their home from which to conduct work activities. This is especially true for call centers, where background noises such as the television, children playing, or dogs barking are considered unwanted disturbances.

Lastly, most companies will require that you have a broadband internet connection and that your computer is fairly up-to-date.

If you are working for yourself:
Working for yourself means that you have more freedom to choose how you work. However, some things that an employer might require of you might be beneficial to consider.

Depending on the type of business you have, you still might need specific software. For example, if you are a web designer, you might need a program like Adobe Dreamweaver.

It still might be desirable to separate an area of your home from which to work, especially if you have children. It allows you to separate work and home life much more easily and lessens the distractions that children, dogs, and other family members may cause.

Finally, when you're working for yourself, you need to keep track of all of your expenses and your income. This becomes very important at tax time, as there are a number of deductions that become open to you. Consider getting a program like Quickbooks or Quicken as these programs make keeping track of your expenses and revenue easy and in a format that you can easily transfer to your tax paperwork at the end of the year.
